Dystopian fiction has dominated human imagination for centuries and themes of futuristic societies oppressed by bureaucratic and technological control have become consistent throughout various novels, films and television shows. The absence and mistreatment of humanity due to factors such as war, famine and poverty criticize current global issues while also foreshadowing the consequences of those issues if left unresolved. Both Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and the movie Gattaca reflect dystopian societies in their approach to human reproduction and social class. The illusion of utopia and dehumanization of individuals are present through both societies’ dependence on an elite group of males. Handmaid’s Tale and Gattaca, while sharing similarities between dystopian themes, challenge reproduction from two greatly opposing perspectives: science and religion. In Gattaca, natural conception is highly unrecommended whereas in Handmaid’s Tale it is firmly encouraged and supported. Handmaid’s Tale concentrates on biblical teachings and gender roles reflect those of old world normalities. Citizens are divided into different social classes and are to conform to the expectations of their class. Gattaca on the other hand is based on gender equality, and social class is divided between two categories-genetically engineered and naturally conceived. To flip a gold coin is not always the route to go when faced with important decisions in life. In time, the choice will have to be made, and the outcome can sometimes be life-changing. When making a conscientious decision, one commits oneself to follow the right path. This fate presents itself in Robert Frost’s â€Å"The Road Not Taken† poem, and is present in the poetic piece of Blanche Farley’s â€Å"The Lover Not Taken.† A large percentage of the stanzas in each poem harmonize each other, and they both use similar words. For example, in the first stanza of each poem and be one traveler, long I stood (Frost), and and mulling it over, long she stood. (Blanche). Both lines are two peas in a pod, and they are a five stanza poem that identically rhyme. Although both poems share many similar aspects, the subject, irony, and hyperbole usage sets the adventurous action and familiar atmosphere for these two poems. The subject of fate and making the right choice are written all over these two corresponding poems. Frost’s subject centers on the approach of deciding a predetermined course in one’s life. The narrator’s path splits into two different directions, and a decision has to be made on which way to go. The focus of P-TECH is to provide students with college level work in high school so they can earn their Associate degree at City Tech in what are called the grade 13 and 14. In personal interview with Mr. Brian Donnelly, the Deputy Director of Early College Initiative at CUNY, he described that in students who are part of P-TECH experience grades 13 and 14, which entails that they are still a high school student because they have some high school requirements left and also have not completed the CUNY proficiencies. However, students are still taking college courses and therefore can complete up to an Associate’s degree in CUNY. Currently, the grade 14 has not been added to the P-TECH schools, but this will added within the next upcoming year. In addition to earning their high school diploma and Associate degree, students part of the P-TECH schools gain work experience in industry. Although school attendance wasn’t compulsory, it did offer children from less privileged backgrounds the opportunity to attend school for free. A person probably fell into the water and struggled to shore using a dog-paddle stroke. There was an Egyptian hieroglyph for swimming dating from 2500 BC. The ancient Greeks and Romans made swimming an important part of their military training programs. There have been known swimming contests that were organized in Japan as early as the 1st century BC. During the Middle Ages in Europe, swimming declined in popularity. People felt that the water was contaminated and a source of disease. Not everyone feared the water, however, Louis XI reportedly swam daily in the Seine. During the early 19th century, swimming enjoyed a revival, especially in England, Lord Byron swam the Dardanelles river, to prove that the mythological hero Leander could have done it. Organized competitive swimming began in England in the 1840s. In 1844 the British were surprised when two American Indians demonstrated the efficiency of a method of swimming similar to the modern crawl. The British still swam with the head above the water, a holdover from the days when people believed that the water was contaminated. An overhand stroke was introduced into England in 1873 by J. A father is there to protect you, support you, and be everything you need him to be and unfortunately I did not have that. When I was younger I always thought I had done something wrong when my father didnt want to see me. All I wanted was for my dad to be my super hero, my confidant, best friend, and all he knew how to be was non existent. As a child I didnt know why my father didnt want to be around, but as I got older I soon understood. Being in a single parent home was normal for me at a young age and I really didnt know that two parents were supposed to be present until one day my mother brought it to my attention. She never spoke negatively about my father, because she knew one day I would understand and dictate how I felt about him based on my personal interactions with him. My mom has always played both roles meaning she was my mother and father. She cooked, cleaned, worked and took care of both my sister and I our whole lives, and as far as my father was concerned well he wasnt in the picture at all.
